Barolo is a DOCG - Denominazione d’Origine Controllata e Garantita (Registered and Guaranteed Designation of Origin)- wine, produced from Nebbiolo grapes.

According to the production disciplinary, it shall be refined in oak barrels for a minimum period of 2 years and put on the market 4 years after the harvest.

Only the following villages are allowed to produce this wine: Barolo, Monforte d’Alba, Castiglione Falletto, Serralunga, La Morra, Novello, Diano d’Alba, Cherasco, Roddi, Verduno and Grinzane Cavour.

In 1980 the DOCG was introduced, with its Commissions of Tasting and Organoleptic and Chemical Analysis. This assures the highest quality of the product and its full accordance to the rules, thus protecting the consumer, who looks for top quality and integrity.

HISTORY

The first written quotation about Nebbiolo in Piedmont takes back to 1268. It’s from this grape variety that Camillo Benso Count of Cavour and the Marquise Colbert produced the first dry wine, introducing new wine making technologies such as sulfitation and clarification.

Fundamental was Luis Oudart’s contribution, a French wine merchant, who focused his attention on the control of the alcoholic fermentation and refinement in wood.

In 1844 one thousand bottles were released for the first time: the Marquise Colbert decided to call this wine BAROLO, since it was produced in the castle of Barolo village.

Also Carlo Alberto from Savoia family (father of the first King of Italy Vittorio Emanuele II) played an important role in the promotion of the wine: he expropriated an area in Serralunga and called it Fontanafredda.

During this time new wineries were born: Siccardi Law in1850 authorized the acquisition and sale of the properties formerly owned by monastic orders. Thanks to this law many farmers were able to become the owners of the lands they had always cultivated and keep producing the highest quality in Piedmont.
